As I prepare to spend time with family and friends for the holidays, I reflect on the myriad stories I have told and heard. I prepare to listen to tales more familiar than my own last name.
Stories like the one of my great-grandmother on her first trip to town, thinking mannequins in shop windows were real people watching her and smiling about her ashen knees. It always brings a smile to my face when I think of how she tugged her handmade dress lower to cover her spindly legs.
I think of stories like the one I told my little brother Christmases ago–that the trees come alive on Christmas night. I had to stay up with him until morning because he was afraid, and it made us closer. I felt terrible for my trickery. But now it’s something we laugh over.
I will be away for the next few days, but I hope you are preparing to tell and hear stories of your own. Please enjoy your time with the people who mean most to you. Happy Holidays!
